7 Natural Tips For A Healthy, Happy and Fun Summer

Summertime means vacations, camping, farmer’s markets, fairs, and maybe even a stampede or two! Here are some tips so you can enjoy a healthy and safe summer.

Drinking Water Hydrates and Helps all body Functions

Drinking Water Hydrates and Helps all body Functions

1. Drinking water is vital to your health.  Water helps us to stay cool and hydrated on those hot summer days. We need to drink at least 16-32 ounces on just a normal summer day, more as the temperature rises.   When you are out and about, bring enough water for the whole family. It is important to remember infants and toddlers can become much more quickly dehydrated than adults.

Your pets also can get sun stroke and dehydrated so it is best to exercise them in the early morning or evening hours when it is cooler. AND never leave children or pets unattended in your vehicle even for a few minutes.

2. Limit your exposure to the sun by wearing a hat/cap, light loose-fitting clothes and use natural sunscreens.  If you have overexposed yourself to the sun’s rays use Aloe Vera gel for the healing and cooling feeling benefits it will provide. Safeguard your eyes with sunglasses that have UV ray protection.

3. If you are planning to do a lot of walking or any sport activities wear the appropriate shoes for these activities. Make sure they are light, comfortable, and wear cotton socks; this will help you avoid blisters and sprains.

Check out Local Super Markets and Farmers Markets for all in seasoned Fruits and Vegetables.

4. To maintain your energy levels this is the perfect time of the year to find Nature’s bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables at Farmer’s Markets and supermarkets. Consume foods that are light and cooling, prepare—vegetable/fruit smoothies, salads, platters of sliced fruits & vegetables. Adding proteins such as nuts, seeds, sprouted beans, soy products, yogurt, and cottage cheese make a light meal. For dinners fish and poultry are easy to barbeque and provide a break from ‘heavier’ meats.

5. Summer Teas are becoming increasingly popular and provide a tasty way to stay hydrated. Try this simple recipe: Take a clear half or one gallon glass jar and fill it with spring water; add flowers and tea leaves or bags – peppermint, chamomile, or lemon grass work well. Make sure they are of a safe quality. Leave in the sun for two hours or up to a whole day and then enjoy.  You can also make moon tea to help enhance your lunar, dreamy side by letting your herbs steep in the cooling, mystical moonlight. Experiment with different flavorings; try orange or lemon peel, a sprig of rosemary, lavender or a few jasmine flowers.

6. Gardening, camping, hiking, and playing outdoors all provide exercise but these outdoor activities can bring with them tick borne diseases.  Reduce that risk by using safe repellents and when you come indoors check clothing, body parts and your pet’s fur. A shower and putting your outdoor clothes in the wash will also help.

7. Last but not least – make sure when traveling to take a natural first aid kit for bites, bee strings, or injuries.

So go out and have a wonderful summer with family and friends; check out this wonderful back yard of ours and enjoy nature and all it has to offer you! Have a happy, healthy and fun summer!

Exercises That Can Reduce Neck and Shoulder Pain

Strength training exercises using dumbbells can reduce pain and improve function in your trapezius muscle, the large muscle which extends from the back of the head down the neck and into the upper back.

Repetitive strain injury has become increasingly common. Many office workers report frequent neck pain.

Researchers found that five strength exercises — the one-arm row, shoulder abduction, shoulder elevation, reverse fly and upright row — can substantially reduce perceived pain.

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

Not surprisingly, repetitive strain injuries have become increasingly common as so many people spend most of their work days in front of computers.

New Year, New Resolutions, New Way; “The Natural Way”

imagesCAYJ9M8H

We are now into another New Year; so what are you going to do differently than any other New Year?  We all make New Year’s Resolutions and we all break them. Why not just keep this one? “I will try with all my will and means to help my body stay or become healthy the natural way.” This is not a very difficult one to keep! There are many things around us that we are already using and that can be used to help or maintain your body’s health. If you are one of those people who are looking to change your lifestyle, why not add self-massage to it too?

There are so many benefits:

* Self-massage can help you lose weight,

* Help you with your sore muscles before and after your new routine at the gym,

* Self-massage can even help you if you decide to quit smoking,

* Self-massage is a big key to help with healing your body naturally,

* Self-massage does not only work on your muscles,

* It also works on all levels of being; mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.

To help you while you make lifestyle changes, and to make your resolutions more enjoyable, here are some of the advantages of Self-Massage:

IMG_5223

*All you need are your hands, so this makes it very inexpensive to try and learn.  The techniques involved actually entail far less strain and stress than you might think, allowing you to diet, exercise or even quit smoking more easily.

*Self-massage helps relax the whole-body systems, making you feel safe, calm, and loose; also allowing you to sleep better.

* To support your exercise program, self-massage can increase blood circulation and flexibility, which in turn helps relieve muscle tension, relax the muscles, thus keeping them healthy, flexible and strong and when self-massage is done prior to exercise helps stave off injuries.

* When we are happy, the body is also happy and healthier. When we decide to make lifestyle changes the natural way, self massage can help produce chemical changes in the body that contribute to feeling happy, naturally.  These chemicals are called endorphins (the natural happy drug). Feeling happiness helps the body experience less stress and feels less depressed.

* Self-massage boosts the immune system, making you feel that you have what it takes to keep going on your natural lifestyle journey. * When you exercise, quit smoking or even change your diet, your body has to “detox”.  Self-massage helps the body detoxify naturally. When your body’s balance is re-established, your chances of succeeding in your healthy lifestyle change increases, thus improving overall health.

* If you are stressing over your resolutions, self-massage will help decrease your blood pressure.  When less stressed, you are helping your body to be more in balance; giving you confidence, drive, and determination to finish what you have already started.

* Self-massage is a great way to really get to know your body; how it feels, where it is sore, what pressure you like or dislike and the overall health of your body inside and out. If you know your body better, you can increase your chances of success in your New Year’s Resolutions.

*Self-massage is also one great way to help your skin look and feel young and healthy. Who doesn’t want that!

So, knowing that self-massage can aid in your New Year’s Resolutions, my question to you is:  why not incorporate self-massage or massage into your lifestyle change, “The Natural Way”?  It is easy to learn and do, easy on the pocket book and it benefits you and your body in so many remarkable ways.  Do yourself a favour and start adding self-massage to your life today! It is never too late to start!
